‘Freebies’: Economist Venkatesh Athreya Exposes Political Flaws in Narrative
In the context of the debate regarding political parties distributing “freebies”, economist Venkatesh Athreya told Newsclick in an interview that revenue spending on people’s development and welfare should be seen as investment rather than expenditure. It is erroneous that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government and some in the judiciary feel that welfare measures are unnecessary and cost to the exchequer, he said. Athreya pointed out that the argument is valid when big corporate entities are given tax concessions.
