Fishers Strangled by Sea Level Rise, Erratic Weather and Fisheries Bill
Puducherry fisherfolk say that their lives and livelihoods have become precarious due to the unpredictable rains and winds. The rising sea level is eating into the coastline, and the fisherfolk are losing out on space to even dock their boats. But, the government is aloof to the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk who are directly impacted by climate change. If the abandoned port is completed, their boats can be parked there, which would ease their work. Small measures like registering and insuring the boats and timely compensation during the fishing ban period would be a big relief, say Pudukuppam fishers. But what they get instead is the Marine Fishers Bill, which further narrows their rights over the sea.
