6th US Veto on Gaza a Wake-up Call for World: ‘No One is Safe Until Everyone is Safe’

Newsclick Report
New Delhi: Condemning the United States for vetoing for the sixth time to block the global call to end genocide in Gaza, the Palestine Embassy in India accused Washington of acting as the political “iron dome” of Israel.
In a press statement the Embassy, while urging caution to the Global South, said, “The United States has long placed itself in the service of Israel’s machinery of oppression; not only by supplying the weapons, funds, and technologies that enable the ongoing butchery of the Palestinian people, but also by providing Israel with an unbreakable shield of political protection.”

PRESS RELEASE
For the Sixth Time: U.S. Veto Blocks Global Call to End Genocide
For the sixth time in a row during the 714 days of the ongoing Israeli televised genocide in Gaza, the United States has once again stood isolated, wielding its veto to block a United Nations Security Council draft resolution. The resolution, submitted by the ten non-permanent members of the Council, called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
This veto comes at a moment when the overwhelming majority of the international community is demanding an end to Israel’s genocidal war, and just days after the UN Human Rights Council issued a landmark report confirming that genocide is being committed in Gaza.
The resolution, which was backed by 14 out of the 15 Council members, called on all parties to respect an immediate and permanent ceasefire and demanded that Israel lift all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. It further stressed the need to guarantee safe and unhindered delivery of aid; particularly through the United Nations and its humanitarian partners, across the entire territory, in full compliance with international humanitarian law and the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence. In addition, the resolution underscored the urgent necessity of restoring essential services in Gaza, where the population faces catastrophic living conditions after nearly two years of relentless Israeli destruction and siege.
The United States has long placed itself in the service of Israel’s machinery of oppression; not only by supplying the weapons, funds, and technologies that enable the ongoing butchery of the Palestinian people, but also by providing Israel with an unbreakable shield of political protection.
Washington has consistently acted as Israel’s political “iron dome,” ensuring impunity for its crimes and enabling the continuation of occupation, colonization, and apartheid in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
The historical record is undeniable: since the establishment of the United Nations Security Council in 1945, some reliable statistics shows that the United States has used its veto power 89 times, and in 51 of those cases “nearly 57%” it was to shield Israel from accountability and to block justice for the Palestinian people. This record makes clear that the U.S. is not a neutral broker of peace but an essential partner in the perpetuation of Israel’s brutal occupation and systematic violations of international law.
This moment is a wake-up call to the international community: no one is safe until everyone is safe. The United States has repeatedly used its veto, alongside sanctions and other unjust measures, not to uphold justice but to preserve its dominance—particularly over the countries of the Global South.
