Unchecked riverbed mining in Kashmir has the locals and environmental activists worried. According to experts, the illegal mining of riverbeds could be disastrous in case there is a flood-like situation. The J&K Mining Rules of 2016 say that no mining can be undertaken in Shali Ganga or Doodh Ganga, or any other stream or river that is 50 metres wide or less. But locals allege that these rules are being openly violated. Despite the prohibition on the use of heavy machinery, the contractors have been using JCBs and stone crushers.
