Morbi Bridge Collapse: Who Will Answer for More Than 135 Deaths?
As per news reports, more than 135 people are believed to have died due to a bridge collapse in Gujarat's Morbi city. Around 50 are children. Usually, common people term such incidents the 'will of God'. They do not think that such incidents happen due to the government's mismanagement. The administration did not adopt the standards for testing, monitoring, and control that are required while carrying out the repair and maintenance of the public property. Just look at the agreement signed between Orewa company and Morbi Municipality to operate the suspension bridge. The contract says that the company can increase ticket rates, and use bridge for commercial purposes, and additionally, government agencies would not interfere in the company's work. There's no mention in the three-page document about the government's responsibility. All these questions related to the Morbi bridge accident have been discussed in this video with the Newsclick Editor-in-Chief Prabir Purkayastha.
